Fine Gardening is a magazine packed with information for the serious and sophisticated gardener. It's articles and departments provide careful consideration of aesthetics and design. There can be found in one issue a range of ideas to adapt to the skill level of the gardener. For the beginner there is instruction on designing container gardens for the summer or for the serious garden architect there is detailed instruction on building waterfalls.

For those who just love to drool, a multitude of pictures are provided within each issue. One can imagine planting a jungle and completely transforming one's front yard with articles such as "Front Yard Gardens Make a Strong First Impression." The magazine presents a wide variety of gardening styles to choose from, natural, cottage and more formal designs.

I love, Love, LOVE this magazine. It is the perfect combination of technique, design, and inspiration every issue. If you are a beginning gardener, you cannot do much better than study this magazine. If you are an experienced gardener, you will learn something new every issue.

This is one of the few gardening magazines that covers the US West -- it is different out here, and they know it. It is rare that you will read in any of their articles, "If it has not rained this week..." which is always a sign to Californians that the article does not apply to us.

One of my favorite features is the semi-regular tool essays. It must be a guy thing, but I really enjoy their tool expert explain the proper way to use a tool. Since I started paying attention to his advice, my back has stopped aching so much at the end of a garden day, I know how to keep my shovels sharp (you would not believe what a difference this makes), and I gave away the leaf blower -- there is a real... I do landscape design and landscape maintenance professionally, and this is the only magazine I'd recommend to clients. As another reviewer noted, The American Gardener is also a fine publication if you are very serious about plants, but for most readers, Fine Gardening best walks the line between accessability and having great information.

I have been a subscriber for eight years and have kept every issue. The information on the spine is clear and so you can easily find that elusive article you remembered and wanted to refer to, without pulling out every issue and having to look at the cover.

As a professional, I find the in-depth articles on different kinds of plants really helpful. It is neat to focus on say, all the different kinds of Forsythias around, so you can really compare the varieties available and know all of your options if you would like to plant one. Bark is not a how-to-care-for-your-dog magazine. It's a magazine about living with dogs. It has fascinating articles about the lives of dogs and people with dogs. It has history of dogs and poems about dogs and interviews with dog trainers and sheep herders and canine rescue squads ... If you want the latest pet grooming tricks, you won't find it here, but if you want insight into what dogs mean to people and what people mean to dogs, this is your magazine. Charming, touching, smart and simply wonderful.

The Bark is by far the greatest magazine for dog lovers ever printed! Insightful articles, essay, stories, and artwork keep you waiting eagerly for the next issue. They cover health, training, home decorating, entrepreneurs, absolutely everything! And maybe most importantly, the Bark does not cater to breeders or exploiters. Instead of advertisements for kennels, they promote shelters and spay/neuter programs. No AKC elitists here! Every dog counts. And if you are looking for the lastest and greatest pet products, their advertisers have the most original and unusual things to be found anywhere. This magazine focuses on human relationships with the dogs that share our world, housepets to service dogs. When each new issue arrives (and there aren't enough!) we make popcorn for ourselves and for our dogs and the we all hit the couch for the entire evening. If you have one dog, no dog, or many, this is the quintessential reading for any person who has ever loved a canine!

I am a new subscriber, have received two issues so far. This is a fascinating magazine, beautifully laid out, and well written. In the first issue I received (which I have now read almost cover-to-cover, something I Never do with magazines), there were articles about Dog rescue in Asia, the science of the historical relationship between Dogs and their humans, emotional vignettes about the love between Dogs and humans and so much more.

I like the reviewer who likened this magazine to the New Yorker about Dogs. The first issue was chock-full of everything from useful tips to weepy stories to fascinating science.

I made an effort to cancel all of my magazine subscriptions recently, simply because I do not have the time to read them all. This one will remain. In fact, I may start archiving this magazine-it is that good! All of our guests inevitable pick up the magazine, drawn by the crisp graphics, and retained by a healthy variety of reading.

Having regularly read "Bicycling" for many years (even when it was called "Bicycling!" in a tasteless 1970s way), I find it surprising to see how much the quality of the magazine has declined. In spite of all those people spending huge amounts of money on fancy equipment, "Bicycling" has become thinner and thinner. It has recently improved somewhat, after most of the editorial staff was fired, and a sign is the dropping of the truly horrible marginal comments (Bike Love and so forth) but it is only suitable for real neophytes. Unfortunately, there is no other single magazine that covers racing, bike touring, test reviews, technique and fitness in North America, no matter how poorly. The articles are very short and sometimes, well, just stupid. There is very little on cycling destinations or serious equipment tests. Ok, I admit it, I still drool over hot bikes. But the essence of the bike reviews in this magazine are, "Whatever you are riding is junk, buy this hot cool bike made from unubtainium" And then next month....repeat. They used to really do some critical evaluations, like what makes a bike great, the physics of riding, the materials, the tires, the flex of the frame for various body shapes and weights. I suppose that got boring, and then manufactures stopped advertising in this journal because they panned their products.

You can still sort of tell what bikes they like, but its much much harder. The rest of the stuff is puff pieces that read like manufacturer's promotion literature. TI seatposts add 10% to your speed rating! TI sprocket bolts lighten your wallet 20% for faster rides to the ATM!

Come On! Most of us could get by with lightening "the frame" by 10 lbs by eating sensibly and riding more, (Reading about it less!) On the other hand if you stuff... Read more

During the 1970s, Bicycling was a great magazine with lots of in-depth articles about bike tours, bike racing, and bicycle technology. The magazine zoomed downhill through the 1990s into the worthless rag that it is now. The articles in the current version of the magazine are very superficial and lifeless. Many are thinly veiled press releases from various advertisers. If you really want to learn about road bicycles and bicycling, a much better magazineis *CyclingPlus*. For mountain biking, try *Bike* or *Dirt Rag*.
