I purchased this"Cowboys and Indians" during my last grocery shopping trip when I was passing the magazine rack and there was John Wayne's face gracing the cover. This edition is a "Special Collector's Edition" with a centennial tribute to our guy. I couldn't resist. And I thought that I may even order a subscription because Cowboys and Indians hold a great interest for me. I love everything to do with them. The feature article on The Duke was great, and I enjoyed reading it very much, but there is not too much else about this publication that would make me want to put out the money to receive it on a regular basis.
The magazine is pretentious and geared toward those cowboys and gals who may be living in Beverly Hills. I recall the first issue that I ever saw of COWBOYS & INDIANS magazine. Tom Selleck graced the cover, touting a story about Selleck and his newest western, CROSSFIRE TRAIL. The story was marvelous. Shortly after buying this copy from a newsstand I subscribed.
As I examined each ensuing issue of C&I one fact became quite clear to me: C&I was all about playing cowboys and Indians. Other than a few well-placed stories about some of the West's most notable characters, each magazine was packed with silly ads for supposedly acceptable western wear, "Society" pages that featured the faces of mostly unknown individuals who were on hand for the latest obscure "Western Awards" or some off-the-beaten-track wine tasting. In fact, just today I took the current issue of C&I and tore out all the advertisements and other nonsense that, in my thinking, really hasn't any business showing up in a magazine about the real West. My husband and I have been buying this magazine for years. I recently found that Amazon carries it and just started a subscription (at a fantastic price). Not only do we find the stories interesting and informative, but the photography is absolutely gorgeous. The first thing we do when we get a new issue is look at the pictures, then read the articles. I've also tried several recipes. As much as we'd like to see more issues than offered in a year, we wouldn't want the quality of this product jeopardized.

I really love this magazine because, first of all, I love Genealogy! And this magazine is a great source of information whether you are just starting out on your family search or if you've been hitting the archives for years. And it is WEB oriented which is just what I'm looking for as I do a lot of research online. Family Tree Magazine always has new or important search tips. I learned to check characteristics of old photos for clues in narrowing a search for birth years when you don't have an exact date. Then I looked in the census for years around that time period to find the person I was looking for.

In all, I enjoy Family Tree Magazine as it is chock-full of interesting stories, tidbits and helpful tips for your genealogy research - some of which are very creative and will help you further along in your genealogical quest.
My only gripe (and it's one that keeps me from regularly patronizing the magazine) is that the vast majority of their articles (I'd say a good 98%) focus on people whose ancestors were from the British Isles and Germany. While I realize the sheer number of those people compose the majority of the American population (for now), it leaves me, as a reader, feeling left out in the cold because I don't share that ancestry.
Useful tips can be carried over to whatever country your ancestors emigrated from but there are an increasing amount of people researching (or who would like to research) Southern and Eastern European ancestry so why not include us (no matter how scant the records may be?).

I love this magazine and have had a subscription for three years now. I always find some tidbit in each magazine that helps me with a brick wall that I have hit while researching my ancestors. It is, also, a very easy and quick read. I will not let this subscription expire!

I love these magazines. We subscribe to Ladybug, Spider, and Cricket (each for a different child). The stories are great, as is the illustration. An illustrator friend of mine says that it is very prestigious to be asked to illustrate a story in these magazines, and I figure it is the same for the stories. No advertising, of course. The thing I like the best is that each magazine is geared toward a certain age of child. Highlights tries to be something for everyone, so we look through the magazine to find an appropriate story. In Ladybug, we just start at the beginning and read straight through. As the publisher will tell you, when your child outgrows Ladybug, you just let them know and they change your subscription to Spider (and later, Cricket. That's as far as we've gotten).

We received this magazine as a gift subscription last December. Beautiful illustrations and interesting short stories with large letters so they are easy for children to read. My daughter (age 4) can read some of them herself, my son (age 3) looks at the words and the pictures and listens to my daughter read and I have even enjoyed reading this magazine from time to time. This is a great children's magazine! I recommend this magazine for children who have just learned to read and for children and parents to read together.

I LOVE this magazine, and more importantly my four year old daughter LOVES this magazine. I agree with all the other rave reviews on this page.
I do want other parents to be aware of one thing, though. This company sold my daughter's name and address to other companies and we have begun to receive inappropriate consumer catalogs addressed to her. Because no other company has her address, I called the customer service number on the back of Ladybug and spoke to a rep there. Her supervisor called back the next day - very professionally, and quite apologetic, and told me that yes, they did sell/give out my daughter's name and address. She then said she would remove my daughter's name from the list that they share/sell. I appreciated the call and the admission, however, I thought other parents might want to be aware of this.
